Blue Angel
The Blue Angel is the first and best-established eco-label in the world. Since 1978 it has set the standards for eco-friendly products and services, which were determined by an independent jury according to defined criteria. With the Blue Angel Format Werk demonstrates its versatile commitment in the field of environmental protection. The Blue Angel is also one of the most important eco-labels for consumers, pointing the way to the ecologically better product and promoting eco-conscious consumption.
Format Werk brands of the categories exercise books, pads, spiral binders, and ring binder refills are marked with the Blue Angel in various designs.
Format Werk is an FSC certificate holder
FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council. This non-profit organization is active worldwide in 43 countries and coordinates the interests of environmental associations, social organizations, progressive forestry enterprises and companies in the wood industry. To obtain an FSC certificate an enterprise has to demonstrate that no other material than certified, controlled, and/or recycled material is used in all production steps. Format Werk obtained the FSC certificate in March 2007.
For products bearing the FSC label we guarantee not to be directly or indirectly involved in the following unacceptable activities:
- Illegal logging or the trade in illegal wood or forest products;
- Violation of traditional and human rights in forestry operations;
- Destruction of high conservation values in forestry operations;
- Significant conversion of forests to plantations or non-forest use;
- Introduction of genetically modified organisms in forestry operations;
- Violation of any of the ILO Core Conventions as defined in the ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work

100% Recycling
The climate neutral “Pure Impact“ paper of our branded products is entirely made from recycled fibres. The paper is produced without adding any optical brighteners and chlorine bleach and has thus obtained the eco-labels BLUE ANGEL (No. 19782), the AUSTRIAN ECO-LABEL (No. UW016) and the NORDIC SWAN (NO. 244053). The paper manufacturing process of Lenzing Papier GmbH has been certified by TÜV Austria Service GmbH (Nr.09-UW/WELS-EX-197).
Austrian Eco-Label
Since the autumn of 2010 all product categories of branded products of Format Werk, i.e. exercise books, pads, spiral binders and ring binder refills, bear the "Austrian Eco-Label". Not only the writing paper but also all jackets and cover sheets are made exclusively of "100% Pure Impact recycled paper" and produced according to the strict criteria of the "Austrian Eco-label".

Nordic Swan
The Scandinavian eco-label "Nordic Swan" decorates products that are eco-friendly and that reduce environmental impact to the lowest possible minimum. To this end the entire production process is consistently monitored. Eco-friendly production and the reduction of wastes are indispensable criteria to obtain this certificate.

Format Werk is a PEFC certificate holder
PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes) is a non-commercial organization engaged on an international level, aiming at responsible forest management. Format Werk successfully completed the main audit on 14.01.2010, thus becoming a PEFC certificate holder. The scope of certification includes the printing, processing and selling of exercise books, pads, spiral binders, books and loose sheets on the basis of physical separation. To maintain the Chain of Custody there is an internal and external audit held once a year.

The Format Werk PEFC company policy
The observance of the PEFC Standards is safeguarded by Format Werk in the following way:
- Identification of supplier: random testing of supplier documents as well as checking on the validity of the certificate on the website www.pefc.org; requesting a valid copy of the certificate; in-depth examination in the case of new suppliers. Moreover, spot checks are performed regarding the quantity supplied, the date of supply, the delivery period and the accounting period.
- Category of origin: For the sale of PEFC labelled products we only accept “100% PEFC certified reel and sheet paper“. We only co-operate with suppliers who use the volume credit method. As a matter of principle, we avoid controversial sources of raw materials. In case of any doubts concerning an invoice, a statement by the supplier is obtained in order to ensure that the raw materials do not come from controversial sources. This involves information on the geographical origin of the raw materials and the urgent request to correct the invoice asap, failing which we will no longer source any raw materials from the supplier concerned.
- Resource Management: We provide the resources for the maintenance and optimization of the Chain Of Custody. Our staff receives appropriate instruction at least once a year to maintain the Chain Of Custody in terms of competent training, skills and experience. Likewise, all technical conditions are in place to support this environment protection system.
- Surveillance and optimization: The quality of the Chain Of Custody is guaranteed by an annual internal audit. Here, all problem areas are identified and appropriate measures initiated, which will then be embedded in the improvement process.
The Format Werk PEFC Company Policy is a dynamic process. It has currently been released by the Management and by the public certifying agency SGS - SOCIETE GENERALE DE SURVEILLANCE SA.
